The Prime Minister recommends someone to the Governor General who will then appoint them as a senator. They meet in session and discuss bills that may or may not become laws. They review, edit, pass and demolish these bills.
How Often Do They Go Into Session?
· Monday-Thursday 2pm
· Friday 9am
· Unless otherwise ordered by the Senate
· Usually, minimum of eight hours weekly
· Many senators do not live in Ottawa, so they are flown in for the week
Who can be a Senator?
To be legible you must be:
- a Canadian citizen
- over the age of 30
- own property in your province or territory
- live in the province you are representing
